posted on 7 January 2011Roger Doyle composed this piece for Uilleann Piper Brian O’Huiginn and electronics in 1995. It made a big impression on Daniel Jacobson (Diatribe co-founder) when he first heard it as a teenager in the late 90s. Shotgun-like blasts and industrial machinery rumble under the plaintive cry of the pipes. This really is Irish electronic music! The program notes are “An Image of Ireland Without The Sweet Celtic Wrapping.”
Eomac is Dubliner Ian McDonnell, a musician/composer/producer/DJ, one half of electronica outfit Lakker, and a member of the !Kaboogie team. His piece takes the original, inserts it into a sub-atomic-particle-blender, and then reconstructs it with fresh atoms in a nice, scented, circular, aromatic, deep electronic track.
ZoiD (who produced Diatribe’s first release “… Versus the Jazz Musicians of Ireland Vol 1″) took both Roger’s and Eomac’s compositions as source material, and cut them up with a classical guitar line at a clipping 165 BPM techno romp.
This month Diatribe releases the first in the Cross Discipline Collaboration Series. Roger Doyle, the godfather of Irish electronic music, has generously supplied us with a six and a half minute piece of music – Under the Green Time (1995), and allowed us to have it chopped up and reassembled into new compositions by two past students of Roger’s electro-acoustic music composition class at Trinity.
