Winner of the Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award for 2010-2013, Thought-Fox comprises some of the finest improvising musicians in Irish and UK jazz. Formed in 2008, this quintet is led by Lauren Kinsella, one of the freshest voices on the Irish and International jazz scene. The band members have collaborated with the likes of Louis Stewart, Dorothy Murphy, John Taylor, Michael Brecker and Julian Argüelles.
…
Thought-Fox takes its name from a Ted Hughes poem written in his 1957 collection ‘Hawk in the Rain’. As with other compositions in Thought-Fox’s repertoire, the poem is used as a springboard for approaching song and group interplay. Lauren’s use of text brings the listener closer to the music but also serves to explore extended vocal technique, odd-time grooves and traditional jazz harmony.

For Tronix Two, we took three tracks from a recent acoustic album, Thought-Fox’s “My Guess”, and handed out the files from the recording session to ten producers and composers to remix.

Thought-Fox is a contemporary jazz quintet of voice, trombone, piano, bass and drums. The remixers chose a track and had five wav files (one for each instrument) to play around with. The results are awesome if we do say so ourselves…

Here are previews from the first six remixes:

more remixes are on the way…

We’re having a gig at the Joinery with all the remixers on Friday, 22nd February. More info soon.

Lauren is all breathes and puffs and clicks and improvised vocal tones. I think Bjork. [This is] attractive music with energy and I enjoyed it with my feet as much as my head. In some ways, a complete band.”

Diatribe are proud to announce the release date for ‘My Guess’, the debut album from outstanding jazz quintet, Thought-Fox

Winner of Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award in 2010, Thought-Fox include some of the freshest improvisers on the Irish and UK jazz scenes, whose other-worldly compositions pivot around the powerful and gorgeous voice of Lauren Kinsella. Fellow foxes include trombonist Colm O’Hara, who has performed with luminaries such as Kenny Wheeler and Michael Brecker, and pianist Tom Gibbs, a stalwart of the Scottish jazz scene. Rhythmic propulsion comes courtesy of seasoned bassist Mick Coady and drummer Simon Roth.

Their debut record will be released at a free launch party on Saturday 1st December at The Grand Social in Dublin.

‘My Guess’ was produced by Nick Roth for Diatribe Records – Ireland’s leading record label for jazz, contemporary, new and improvised music. Founded in 1999, their catalogue is a roster of the most innovative and creative artists working in Ireland today. CD available to purchase from www.diatribe.ie

My Guess features original songs, mostly composed by Kinsella, a natural-born improviser blessed with a truly astonishing voice. On My Guess, Kinsella delves deep into personal experience and relationships to explore themes of loss and memory, and the idea of people moving on. A deliciously diverse collection of tracks that weaves together Kinsella’s beautiful lyrical flights and expressive improvisations with the virtuosic interplay of trombonist Colm O’Hara, anchored by the powerhouse rhythm section of Tom Gibbs on piano, bassist Mick Coady and drummer Simon Roth. The result is an exquisite, intoxicating, and sometimes edgy blend of voices that manages to maintain equilibrium while probing and pushing in different directions.

Hailed as “a completely down to earth and exquisitely vivacious young Irish singer” (Katie Bull, The New York City Jazz Record), Lauren Kinsella has performed in venues across Ireland, the UK, Switzerland, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, Germany and India. She completed her BA at Newpark Music Centre and has since studied with R.A. Ramamani in India, Mats Holtne in Sweden, and represented Ireland at the 19th IASJ meeting under Dave Liebman. She is currently pursuing her Jazz Masters at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, London. Lauren has performed in festivals around the world including the Shiva Festival, Malleswaram, India, The Songlines Encounters Festival, London, The Cork Jazz Festival, The 12 Points Festival, Porto and The European Jazz Nights Festival, Oslo. Lauren is a member of other groups such as Blue-Eyed Hawk with trumpeter Laura Jurd, Lupo with Swiss singer Sarah Buechi, and duo collaborations with musicians such as Alex Huber, Mark Sanders and Francesco Turrisi.

This two-horns-no-chords quartet was established by drummer Matt Jacobson in 2007 as a creative outlet for his compositions as well as his somewhat perverse fascination with anagrams. While he failed to find such avid fellow followers of wordplays, he did find and enlist the help of creative and rhythmic specialists Derek Whyte (bass) and Nick Roth (alto sax), with trombonist Colm O’Hara arriving a little later.

The band play all original compositions from Jacobson (“one of Ireland’s most exciting young talents” – the Irish Times) with influences including artists such as Charles Mingus, Steve Coleman, Deerhoof and Phil Ivey. The formula for putting all this together in one palindromical setting is downtown grooves with catchy melodies and collective improvs.

After a stop-start two years while Matt was studying for his MA in Music Performance in Lucerne, Switzerland, followed by a 6-week journey to South India to study the region’s traditional Carnatic music, ReDiviDeR are now hitting the ground running. Recent performance highlights include supporting Chris Potter’s Underground (“…easily the most compelling saxaphonist of his generation” – Detroit Press) at the Galway Jazz Festival 2010, representing Ireland at the 12 Points! Festival 2011 (“…a fine, fly set with a solid sense of style and direction” – Laurence Mackin, The Irish Times) and playing to a packed Triskel Auditorium at the Cork Jazz Festival 2011 where they were also awarded the accolade of “Best Young Irish Band“.

Between them, the members of the band have performed all over the world with some of the most innovative and well-respected musicians out there including Evan Parker, Gilad Atzmon, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Florian Ross and Peter Evans.
